Ben Harper
Origins and Early Years
Benjamin Chase Harper was born on October 28, 1969, in Claremont, California. He grew up in his grandparents’ music store, the Folk Music Center, a legendary place founded in 1958 where he was surrounded from childhood by instruments from around the world and visiting musicians.
He learned to play the Weissenborn, a Hawaiian lap steel guitar that would become his signature instrument. As a teenager, he performed in Los Angeles coffeehouses, developing a unique style blending slide guitar, fingerpicking, and deeply emotional vocals.
Career and Major Albums
His first album, Fight for Your Mind (1995), introduced him to a wider audience with a unique blend of blues, reggae, and socially conscious folk. Burn to Shine (1999) confirmed his status as a major artist, supported by his reputation as an exceptional live performer.
He regularly collaborates with the Innocent Criminals, his longtime backing band. Over the course of his career, he has won 3 Grammy Awards, notably for the album Get Up! with Charlie Musselwhite in 2014. His ability to move from the softest whisper to the most visceral cry makes every concert an intense experience.
Commitment and Style
Ben Harper blends blues, rock, folk, reggae, and soul with rare emotional intensity. His lyrics explore civil rights, social justice, love, and spirituality. He is a committed artist, closely connected to African American and Native American communities.
His playing on the Weissenborn and slide guitar has become his sonic signature, recognizable from a single note.
Signature Guitar
The Weissenborn (a solid wood Hawaiian lap steel guitar played on the lap) is his instrument of choice. He also uses Fender Stratocaster guitars, Cole Clark acoustic guitars, and Gibson acoustics. His vintage Weissenborn guitars from the 1920s and 1930s are among the most sought-after in the world.
