The Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan’s symphonic alternative rock
Formation and Early Years
The Smashing Pumpkins was formed in Chicago in 1988 by Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar), James Iha (guitar), D’arcy Wretzky (bass), and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums).
The Siamese Dream / Mellon Collie Era
Siamese Dream (1993) is a masterpiece of layered guitars and powerful melodies. The ambitious double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) sold more than 10 million copies and featured hits such as “1979”, “Tonight, Tonight”, and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”.
The band received five Grammy Award nominations and won two Grammy Awards.
Billy Corgan is an obsessive perfectionist known for recording nearly all the guitar and bass parts himself in the studio, often frustrating his bandmates. On Siamese Dream, he layered dozens of guitar tracks to create monumental walls of sound, an approach inspired by My Bloody Valentine and Phil Spector.
Legacy
The Smashing Pumpkins have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. Billy Corgan is renowned for his perfectionist approach and his guitar sound, which blends dream pop textures with heavy metal intensity.
Iconic Guitars
Billy Corgan is closely associated with the Fender Stratocaster, particularly his famous “Bat Strat”, as well as various Gibson Les Paul Custom models.
