Formation and Early Years

The Offspring was formed in Garden Grove, California, in 1984 by Dexter Holland (vocals, guitar) and Noodles (guitar). The band emerged from the California hardcore punk scene alongside groups such as Bad Religion and Social Distortion.

Smash and Independent Success

Smash (1994), released on the independent label Epitaph Records, sold more than 16 million copies, becoming the best-selling independent album in history at the time. The singles “Come Out and Play” and “Self Esteem” dominated radio airwaves.

Americana (1998) and the hit single “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)” confirmed the band’s worldwide success.

Dexter Holland is also a licensed pilot and holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Southern California. He has published peer-reviewed scientific papers on HIV, making him one of the few punk rock musicians with a doctoral degree.
