Slash
The Guitar Hero with the Top Hat
Origins and Early Years
Saul Hudson, better known as Slash, was born on July 23, 1965, in Hampstead, London, to an English father and an African-American mother. He grew up in Los Angeles and started playing guitar at the age of 15, inspired by Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and the blues.
Guns N’ Roses
With Guns N’ Roses, he co-wrote some of the most famous riffs in rock history, including “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, “Welcome to the Jungle”, and “Paradise City”. Appetite for Destruction (1987) remains the best-selling debut album of all time.
He left the band in 1996 following tensions with Axl Rose.
Solo Career and Return
He founded Slash’s Snakepit before later collaborating with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. In 2016, he rejoined Guns N’ Roses for the highly successful Not in This Lifetime Tour. He is consistently ranked among the greatest guitarists of all time by major music publications.
Slash is also passionate about snakes and reptiles, maintaining an impressive collection at his home in Los Angeles. His image—top hat, black curly hair, cigarette, and Les Paul—has become so iconic that it has been parodied and referenced in countless films, television shows, and video games, notably Guitar Hero. He is regularly ranked in the top five guitarists in history by specialized music magazines.
Iconic Guitar
Slash is famously associated with the Gibson Les Paul Standard, particularly a replica of a 1959 model released as a Gibson Signature guitar. His top hat, black curls, and Les Paul form one of the most recognizable images in rock music.
