Oasis
The Gallagher brothers – Britpop in its prime
Formation and early years
Oasis was formed in Manchester in 1991 around Liam Gallagher (vocals) and Noel Gallagher (guitar, songwriting). The band became part of the Britpop wave and signed to Creation Records in 1993.
Rise to fame and rivalry
Definitely Maybe (1994) became the fastest-selling debut album in British history. (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) sold over 22 million copies and included the hits “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger”.
The rivalry with Blur dominated the British press in 1995. The Knebworth concerts in August 1996 attracted 250,000 fans over two nights.
The relationship between Liam and Noel is one of the most turbulent in rock history: public insults, backstage fights, and cancelled shows. During a concert in Munich in 2002, Liam walked off stage after being hit by a thrown object. Noel publicly called him a “potato” in the press. This explosive dynamic paradoxically fueled the band’s creativity and myth.
Breakup and legacy
Constant tension between Liam and Noel led to the band’s breakup in August 2009. Noel went on to form High Flying Birds, while Liam formed Beady Eye before pursuing a solo career. The band has sold over 75 million albums. A reunion was announced in 2024 for 2025.
Iconic guitars
Noel Gallagher is inseparable from his custom Epiphone Sheraton and Gibson ES-355 guitars, including the iconic Union Jack model. He also uses Gibson Les Paul guitars.
