Marilyn Manson

The rock of provocation

Origins and early years

Brian Hugh Warner was born on January 5, 1969 in Canton, Ohio. He created the stage name Marilyn Manson by combining Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. He formed the band of the same name in 1989 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Rise and controversy

Discovered by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), he released Portrait of an American Family (1994). Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998) made him the most controversial figure in 1990s rock.
The album Mechanical Animals debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. His provocative image blending glam rock, industrial, and horror sparked intense debate in conservative America.
After the Columbine massacre in 1999, Manson was wrongly made a scapegoat by media and politicians, accused of influencing the shooters (who were not actually fans of the band). His response in Michael Moore’s documentary Bowling for Columbine—he would have simply “listened” to the youths—remains one of the film’s most memorable moments.
