Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz: retro-futuristic rock and rock icon
Origins and Early Years
Leonard Albert Kravitz was born on May 26, 1964 in Manhattan, New York. The son of actress Roxie Roker and TV producer Sy Kravitz, he grew up between New York and Los Angeles, surrounded by jazz, soul, and rock.
Career and Success
His debut album, Let Love Rule (1989), blends rock, soul, funk, and retro psychedelia. Are You Gonna Go My Way (1993) and its explosive opening riff made him an international rock star.
He won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance four years in a row (1999–2002), an absolute record in this category.
Multi-instrumentalist and Legacy
Lenny Kravitz plays all instruments on his albums and produces them himself. He is also an actor (playing Cinna in The Hunger Games), designer, and fashion icon, embodying a form of total rock ’n’ roll.
Lenny Kravitz is one of the rare modern artists to play all instruments on his albums—guitar, bass, drums, keyboards—and to produce them himself in his studio. His vintage aesthetic, inspired by the 1960s–1970s, deliberately contrasts with contemporary digital production.
Iconic Guitars
Lenny Kravitz is associated with the Gibson Flying V, Fender Stratocaster models, and a Jerry Jones/Danelectro-style double-neck guitar. He is a collector of vintage instruments.
