John Mayer
The bluesman of the pop generation
Origins and Early Years
John Clayton Mayer was born on October 16, 1977 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He discovered the guitar at the age of 13 while listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan. He studied at the Berklee College of Music before moving to Atlanta.
From Pop Rock to the Blues
His debut album, Room for Squares (2001), and the single “Your Body Is a Wonderland” propelled him to pop-rock stardom. He later moved toward the blues with Continuum (2006), critically acclaimed, and formed the John Mayer Trio with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino.
He has won 7 Grammy Awards throughout his career.
Despite his widely recognized musical talent, John Mayer went through media controversies linked to provocative interviews in the early 2010s. He overcame this by refocusing on music—especially the blues—and drastically reducing his media appearances, preferring to let his guitar speak for itself.
Collaborations and Legacy
John Mayer joined Dead & Company in 2015, continuing the legacy of the Grateful Dead. He is recognized as one of the best guitarists of his generation, praised by Eric Clapton and B.B. King.
Iconic Guitar
John Mayer is associated with his PRS signature models (Silver Sky), the Fender Stratocaster (“Black One”), and Martin acoustics, notably the Martin OM-45 20th Anniversary.
