David Gilmour’s Black Strat Breaks Every Record
The highlight of the evening came with a truly historic moment. David Gilmour’s legendary Black Strat sold for an astonishing $14.55 million, officially becoming the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction. It is a new all-time record for one of Pink Floyd’s most iconic instruments.
This Fender Stratocaster, famously known as the Black Strat, is one of the most celebrated guitars in music history. Purchased by David Gilmour in New York in 1970, it was used on some of rock’s most influential albums, including The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. It was also the guitar behind some of the greatest solos ever recorded, most notably “Comfortably Numb.” After first being auctioned in 2019 for nearly $4 million, it became part of Jim Irsay’s renowned collection. This latest sale has now shattered every previous record.
Jerry Garcia and Kurt Cobain: Millions for Legendary Guitars
Another star of the evening was Jerry Garcia’s famous “Tiger” guitar. Custom-built by master luthier Doug Irwin, Tiger served as Garcia’s primary instrument with the Grateful Dead for nearly a decade. It has become one of the defining symbols of the jam band movement and American rock history. During this spectacular auction, it sold for more than $10 million, further cementing its status as one of the world’s most important collectible guitars.
No account of this historic sale would be complete without mentioning Kurt Cobain. A 1969 Fender Mustang played by Cobain, most famously seen in Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video, was also among the auction’s most anticipated lots. As an enduring symbol of the grunge explosion of the early 1990s, the guitar represents an entire generation of musicians and fans. It sold for several million dollars, once again demonstrating the extraordinary historical and cultural value of these legendary instruments.
