The story of Richie Sambora’s Gibson Explorer is one of them. An iconic guitar, stolen more than forty years ago… and one that we had the immense privilege of finding and returning to him. A rare moment. Almost unreal.
Richie Sambora’s Gibson Explorer: a legendary guitar rediscovered
This guitar is connected to the birth of a sound. This 1976 Explorer dates back to the early days of Bon Jovi, a time when everything was being built. Richie bought it as a young musician and modified it according to his own vision. With its radical shape and powerful attack, it was one of those instruments that helped forge a style. A stage guitar, designed for impact, for riffs, for moments that last.
Stolen… then missing for decades. In the early 1980s, the guitar was stolen from a warehouse. And for more than four decades, it completely disappeared from the radar. Like many instruments stolen during that era, it became almost a legend, a piece people talked about but no one ever saw. Until recently.
After extensive research and authentication work, we managed, at Matt’s Guitar Shop, to get our hands on this Explorer again. And above all… to bring it back to its owner. But finding the guitar was only one part of the story. The most powerful moment was this one: placing it back into Richie Sambora’s hands.
A reunion that goes beyond the story of an instrument
A moment suspended in time. Because it is not just an instrument that is being returned. It is a part of a life. A piece of personal history. A guitar that travelled through time… only to finally return to where it began.
