Jeff Buckley
The fallen angel of music
Origins and Early Years
Jeffrey Scott Buckley was born on November 17, 1966 in Anaheim, California. The son of singer Tim Buckley (whom he barely knew), he grew up surrounded by music and developed a voice with an exceptional range spanning nearly four octaves.
Grace
His only studio album, Grace (1994), was modestly received upon its release but later became a cult album. His cover of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen is now considered the definitive version of the song.
Tracks such as “Last Goodbye” and “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” showcase a mastery blending rock, folk, jazz, and classical music.
The album Grace was not an immediate commercial success, selling modestly upon release. Over the years, its reputation grew through word of mouth and the admiration of artists such as Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay, and Adele, all of whom cite it as a major influence. It is now certified platinum in several countries.
Death and Legacy
Jeff Buckley accidentally drowned in the Mississippi River in Memphis on May 29, 1997, at the age of 30, while swimming fully clothed. Despite releasing only one album, he is considered one of the most influential artists of the 1990s.
Iconic Guitars
Jeff Buckley is closely associated with his 1983 Fender Telecaster in Blonde finish and the black Gibson Les Paul he used on stage.
