Taylor Doubleneck Richie Sambora Signature Koa

Taylor Doubleneck Richie Sambora Signature Koa

Impressive instruments with such a distinctive aesthetic, double-neck guitars quickly went beyond mere curiosities to become the hallmark of the most technical and talented musicians. Inseparable from epic rock songs, these astonishing instruments have become cult objects as mysterious as they are magical. Among the guitarists who made them their trademark, Jimmy Page and Slash stand alongside Richie Sambora. The Bon Jovi guitarist fully embraced the possibilities offered by these instruments with exceptional harmonic potential, using them on several albums and at every one of his concerts. Two of these extraordinary instruments can be discovered at Matt’s Guitar Shop. Specially designed for Richie Sambora, they showcase all the unique features of these legendary guitars that are exceptions on the musical scene. This Taylor acoustic double-neck is a fantastic instrument and part of a series of three guitars produced for Richie Sambora.

Richie Sambora is one of those virtuoso musicians who have made entire stadiums vibrate with the power of his hands alone. As Bon Jovi’s guitarist, he shared his magic every night behind a guitar, captivating crowds with the band’s biggest hits and solos. Alongside his guitar skills, Richie Sambora developed a keen knowledge of instruments and a special love for extraordinary pieces. Naturally, he gave double-neck guitars a prominent place in his touring arsenal. These guitars, offering superior harmonic richness, perfectly complemented Richie Sambora’s ambitious compositions, allowing him to change tones without changing instruments. It is hard to be more associated with these extraordinary instruments than Richie Sambora: the inimitable Ovation, the warm-sounding Taylor, the legendary Telecaster — all double-necked — and even the very impressive triple-neck Ovation of Moscow… He surrounded himself with a multitude of acoustic and electric pieces that met his highest standards.

This Richie Sambora Signature Koa Taylor double-neck is an acoustic guitar of exceptional quality specially designed for the guitarist. It fits directly into the lineage of his complex and demanding instruments. Always seeking a very wide palette of sounds, he worked with the best to design and produce guitars that are technically and musically remarkable: this Taylor meets all those criteria. It is an exceptional guitar with a clear, warm, and precise sound, combining a twelve-string lower neck and a six-string upper neck. Made entirely of koa, it features an exceptional flamed back with a mahogany neck and ebony fingerboard. Crafting this guitar was such a technical challenge that Taylor’s luthiers decided to make only three. Richie keeps one, another was given to Richie Sambora’s producer and friend Bob Rock, and the last one is available at Matt’s Guitar Shop. This Taylor is an absolutely extraordinary guitar that was played by Richie and possesses striking resonance and clarity. A true exceptional guitar to discover at Matt’s Guitar Shop!

Richie Sambora
(1959)

Band: Bon Jovi
Main Guitar: Fender Stratocaster Signature
Must-listen track: Livin’ On A Prayer

The story of rock is made this way: for every Mick Jagger, there’s a Keith Richards. For every Steven Tyler, there’s a Joe Perry. For every Robert Plant, there’s a Jimmy Page. For every superstar singer who ignites the crowd, there’s a shadowy and endlessly cool guitarist who covers the background and only takes the spotlight in sporadic thirty-second bursts.

Richie Sambora joined the New Jersey band Bon Jovi in 1983, just months after its formation. From the start, Sambora’s playing and personality perfectly complemented the image of founding singer Jon Bon Jovi. Together, they formed a songwriting duo responsible for hard FM classics that remain staples on every radio station. The real breakthrough came in 1986 with the album Slippery When Wet, on which Sambora co-wrote nine of the ten tracks, including the three mega-singles “Livin’ On A Prayer,” “You Give Love A Bad Name,” and “Wanted Dead Or Alive.” You can hear the fast, precise, energetic, and inventive playing of the guitar hero, who of course absorbed Van Halen influences like all soloists of the time, but added his own distinctive touch. The artful arrangements are evident in the use of a 12-string guitar on “Wanted...,” the pitch shifter on the solo of “You Give Love A Bad Name,” and the talkbox on “Livin’ On A Prayer.”

From then on, the band became colossal, touring worldwide before crowds of ecstatic fans. Bon Jovi’s genius lies in their ability to reconnect with success across several years, thus reaching multiple successive generations. They were back at the top of the charts in 1994 with “Always,” then again in 2000 with “It’s My Life” (also co-written by Sambora), establishing themselves with a new audience that still follows them today.

Victim of his demons, Sambora was forced to leave the band in 2013, right in the middle of another world tour. Since then, he launched the band RSO with his ex-partner Orianthi and seems increasingly drawn to the Telecaster and Esquire as time goes by, whereas he was mostly known for his superstrats during the Bon Jovi years. Richie Sambora’s musical future will surely bring some more great surprises.
