Within the circle of guitar prodigies, John Mayer holds a special place. A true six-string wunderkind, he has established himself on the contemporary music scene as an inventive, technical, and virtuosic guitarist—admired by guitar lovers around the world. While Mayer initially gravitated toward vintage classics, he eventually developed his own signature models with Fender and later with PRS. Among them, the Black One stands out as a remarkable exception. This Lorenzi Black One Tribute is a stunning luthier-crafted guitar that pays homage to John Mayer’s iconic Black One, a guitar with a unique look and storied past.

A devoted admirer of Stevie Ray Vaughan and his well-worn “Number One” Strat, John Mayer commissioned a custom “heavy relic” guitar in 2004 from the Fender Custom Shop. Crafted by masterbuilder John Cruz, the project was closely supervised by Mayer himself to ensure it captured the feel and appearance of his idol’s legendary instrument. The result: the now-iconic “Black One,” which has followed Mayer onto the world’s biggest stages and into its finest studios.

Fascinated by the legacy of this guitar, Italian luthier Lorenzi set out to create a faithful tribute to Mayer’s beautifully aged Stratocaster, complete with exposed wood and worn lacquer. Each piece is handcrafted in his Italian workshop, with carefully relic’d finishes, premium wood selection, and meticulously chosen pickups. The guitar is a stunning sonic and visual replica of John Mayer’s Black One—a striking tribute to a modern legend. Now available at Matt’s Guitar Shop!

John Mayer

In the early 2000s, when American pop was searching for new faces and blues seemed reserved for veterans, a young guitarist with a quiet charm changed the game: John Mayer. Arriving with his acoustic guitar and songs shaped for intimate stages, he quickly proved to be much more than a songwriter of ballads. Behind the apparent softness was a virtuoso, a passionate musician capable of blending pop sensitivity, folk depth and the power of modern blues.

John Mayer has never sought empty virtuosity. As a craftsman of feeling, his hallmark is the right note, the guitar line that breathes, the subtle groove that settles in without ever needing to be overplayed. From Continuum to Born and Raised to Sob Rock, he has built a universe where the guitar speaks as much as the voice—sometimes even more. His solos carry the flavor of late-night confessions, of elegant melancholy, as if they were whispered rather than played.

With the John Mayer Trio, he revealed his bluesman side to the wider public: incisive playing inspired by SRV, Clapton or B.B. King, yet always filtered through a deeply personal sensitivity. His touch, often relying on hybrid fingerstyle, blends softness with surgical precision. On stage, he shifts between amused humility and luminous flights, letting the guitar take all the space it deserves.

And then there is his almost emotional relationship with instruments. Mayer maintains a deep bond with his guitars, which he selects, modifies and collects with the eye of an obsessive connoisseur. Long associated with Fender (his Black One has become legendary), he later contributed to the creation of signature models at PRS, including the Silver Sky, designed in the finest detail to match his touch and sonic aesthetics. Every guitar in his collection reflects his quest for perfect balance: impeccable ergonomics, precise character, flawless craftsmanship. No extravagance—just a sincere search for a sound that mirrors who he is.

Relentless, John Mayer is constantly evolving: a sensitive singer, a formidable guitarist, a meticulous songwriter—always in motion. Between his solo albums, his role in Dead & Company and his various side projects, he moves from one universe to another with rare ease.

One thing is certain: John Mayer embodies the modern guitar hero—someone who blends technique, emotion and elegance without ever betraying the song. With his subtle playing, introspective writing and deep love for fine guitars, he remains an inspired captain, guided by one conviction: a well-played melody can express what words will never reach.
