Gibson Thunderbird G2 Gene Simmons Ex Gene Simmons Kiss
As KISS takes its final bow, the full scale of their immense legacy is only beginning to be measured. Here is a piece of End of The Road Tour history, straight from the gear of Gene Simmons. This G2 Thunderbird bass was modified, heavily played, and signed by the God of Thunder during the band’s final tour.
KISS was a master of grand spectacle, creating shows that matched their energetic and infectious rock. Their iconic armor and makeup stood alongside pyrotechnic effects, and their instruments quickly became part of the show themselves—personalized accessories as integral to the act as the costumes. Just as Paul Stanley made the Iceman his signature guitar, Gene Simmons also had his own iconic basses: from the Punisher and the striking Ax bass to the more classic Thunderbird G2.
This Thunderbird G2 bass was modified and played by Gene Simmons during the KISS End of The Road Tour. Based on his signature model, it underwent several modifications to suit his playing preferences and needs. The original pickups were replaced with EMGs, two volume knobs were removed and sealed to leave only one, and the strap locks were replaced with more rugged attachments. Several signs of wear testify to its heavy use by the God of Thunder: in addition to the wear on the back, you’ll notice the bridge worn down and partially torn from his aggressive playing, a line of picks taped to the body, and several strips of black tape.
These numerous modifications by Gene Simmons make it a highly personal and historical instrument, especially in light of the band’s retirement and the bass’s visible stage wear. It was retrieved on the night of KISS’s final Paris show in June 2022, hence the inscription “Rock N Roll All Nite for the Last Time.” It comes with its case, also signed by Gene Simmons.
