The Jim Irsay Collection was long considered the largest and richest collection in the world. Every instrument and cultural object within it holds major importance. Before the historic sale of this collection at Christie’s, we had the opportunity to attend a private viewing and admire some of its remarkable pieces. Join us on this journey.

David Gilmour’s Black Strat, a historic guitar

Some guitars tell a story. Others tell history. The great history. This is the case with David Gilmour’s famous Black Strat. David Gilmour’s Black Strat is now considered one of the greatest instruments in history. A centerpiece of Jim Irsay’s collection, it has just been sold at Christie’s… becoming the most expensive guitar ever sold in the world.

It is difficult to imagine a more iconic guitar. Acquired by Gilmour in the late 1960s, this black Fender Stratocaster quickly became his main instrument with Pink Floyd. It was with this guitar that he recorded and performed on some of the most important albums in rock history: The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall.

And above all, it was this guitar that gave birth to timeless solos, including the one from Comfortably Numb, often considered one of the greatest solos ever recorded.

A Fender Stratocaster that became a global icon

The “Black Strat” is not a frozen-in-time guitar. Over the years, Gilmour modified, adapted, and transformed it according to his needs. Pickups, neck, electronics… the instrument evolved alongside him, becoming a direct extension of his playing. This is also what makes it unique: it is not only legendary, it is deeply personal.

During this exceptional sale of the Jim Irsay Collection, the Black Strat reached an absolute peak. Sold for $14.55 million, it set a new world record and confirmed its status as the ultimate guitar icon. An impressive figure, but ultimately a logical one for an instrument that helped write some of the most important chapters in the history of music.

The record-breaking sale of the Black Strat at Christie’s

Coming close to the Black Strat means instantly understanding what makes a guitar legendary. It is not only a matter of wood or electronics. It is a matter of history, emotion, and impact. Every note played on this guitar has left its mark on generations. At Matt’s Guitar Shop, we follow these moments with passion, and discovering this guitar from such close proximity was extraordinary.
