Some guitars are modern… And then there are those that completely redefine what “modern” actually means.
That is exactly the case with the Leo Scala Heavy Addiction Explorer, which we have just received at Matt’s Guitar Shop. An absolutely singular piece, born from the meeting of Gibson and one of the most respected luthiers of his generation: Leo Scala. It is one of the most striking instruments we have seen in recent years.
When Gibson Collaborates with Luthier Leo Scala
This guitar is part of Gibson’s prestigious Master Artisan Collection, a very special program that brings the brand together with a select group of exceptional luthiers to create truly extraordinary instruments. When Gibson discovered Leo Scala’s work in his Los Angeles workshop, the collaboration emerged naturally, driven by a shared vision: to honor Gibson’s heritage while pushing its boundaries further.
Leo Scala, who has built his reputation over more than 30 years through inventive designs and obsessive attention to detail, approaches each guitar as a unique work of art. The Heavy Addiction Explorer is based on a legendary platform: the late-1950s Gibson Explorer. But instead of treating it as a simple reissue, Scala turns it into a creative canvas.
An Explorer with a Unique Character
No two guitars are alike. Each instrument has its own personality, its own aging process, its own character. In the “Heavy Addiction” series, only a handful of guitars exist worldwide. What immediately stands out about this Explorer is its attitude. Leo Scala is not aiming for a “perfect” guitar in the traditional sense. He is creating a living instrument, one that already carries a story within its wood, its finish, and every detail. The aging is extreme, intentional, and deeply artistic. This goes far beyond standard relic treatment: every mark is designed as part of the instrument’s identity.
As the philosophy behind this series suggests, these guitars reflect an obsession with detail, tone, and emotion. We were lucky enough to receive two of them at Matt’s Guitar Shop. And they didn’t stay long: one is already sold, so don’t wait!
