Placebo

The dark and androgynous rock

Formation and early years

Placebo was formed in London in 1994 by Brian Molko (vocals, guitar) and Stefan Olsdal (bass). Molko, born on December 10, 1972, in Brussels, brought an androgynous aesthetic and lyrics exploring identity, sexuality, and addiction.

Success and major albums

The self-titled debut album (1996) and the single “Nancy Boy” established the band on the British alternative rock scene. Without You I’m Nothing (1998) and Meds (2006) remain their most acclaimed albums.
David Bowie, a fan of the band, invited Molko to perform a duet on “Without You I’m Nothing” in 1999.
Brian Molko is openly bisexual, and his lyrics openly explore sexual identity, addiction, depression, and alienation. This raw honesty created a deep connection with the band’s fanbase, making Placebo a refuge band for many teenagers who felt marginalized by society.
