Deryck Whibley

Sum 41 – Canadian punk rock

Origins and Early Years

Deryck Jason Whibley was born on March 21, 1980 in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. Raised by his single mother, he discovered punk and metal at a young age through Iron Maiden, Metallica, and the Descendents. He formed Sum 41 in 1996 in Ajax, a suburb of Toronto, with childhood friends. The band’s name refers to the 41 days of summer remaining when they formed the group.

Success of Sum 41

The debut album, All Killer No Filler (2001), driven by the single “Fat Lip”, sold over 4 million copies and established Sum 41 as one of the leading bands of the pop-punk scene in the 2000s. Does This Look Infected? (2002) made the sound heavier, and Chuck (2004), named after a UN peacekeeper helmet that saved their lives during a shoot in Congo amid conflict, pushed their blend of punk and metal even further.
Whibley is the band’s singer, guitarist, and main songwriter. His writing combines catchy pop melodies with aggressive metal riffs, creating a distinctive sound in the punk scene.
