2000s teenagers know it well: Sum 41 are among the ultimate punk rock icons. Though they retired in triumph a few months ago, their legend keeps growing, and the band remains enshrined in the pantheon of modern rock. Discover this J-50, one of the favorite acoustic guitars of their frontman, Deryck Whibley.

Deryck Whibley is the unwavering leader of Sum 41. Having battled addiction, he managed to overcome his struggles, rise back to the top, and make Sum 41 one of the defining bands of the punk scene. When the band announced their retirement, fans across the globe reacted emotionally, celebrating the importance of this beloved and respected group. Around that time, Matt’s Guitar Shop connected with Deryck Whibley to offer several of his stage and studio guitars for sale.

This beautiful 1964 Gibson J-50 is one of them. More than just a lovely vintage instrument, it was part of Deryck’s personal collection and accompanied Sum 41 on their farewell tour. It was notably played on the ballad “Pieces.” This piece of the band’s history bears Deryck’s signature on the back of the headstock, along with the inscription “41,” a nod to the band he passionately led for years.
