Gibson SG Les Paul Standard 1962

The second half of the 20th century saw fierce competition among guitar manufacturers to establish their models as the undisputed standards of the music scene. Iconic models such as the Telecaster, Stratocaster, and Les Paul emerged one after the other, revolutionizing the hierarchy of electric instruments. It was in 1961 that the famous SG was born—the renowned double cutaway solid-body guitar in cherry finish, soon embraced by the greatest guitarists. This stunning 1962 Gibson SG Les Paul Standard is from the very first months of the model’s production, which quickly became one of the most iconic guitars in music history.

When the SG hit the market, it featured a new, modern design that redefined everything known up to that point. It showcased a combination of bevels, points, and angles carved from a single piece of solid mahogany, shaped by Gibson’s craftsmen into a slim and elegant form. The horns of the cutaways form two graceful points that would later become the trademark of Angus Young, the legendary guitarist of AC/DC. The bevels, meanwhile, give the guitar a sleek appearance and remain one of the defining features of the SG’s top.

The 1962 SG Les Paul Standard offered by Matt’s Guitar Shop is from the very first months of production. The headstock bears the inscription “Les Paul” alongside the Gibson logo and a thistle-shaped inlay below. The finish on the top and neck features the cherry red color that would become iconic on the SG, and the rosewood fingerboard is fitted with trapezoid inlays. This exceptional example includes all the features of those early models: a small pickguard (which would be replaced by a larger screw-on version doubling as a pickup mount starting in 1967), a side-pull Maestro vibrola (replaced from 1963), and the Les Paul branding, which was discontinued after 1963.
