Jeff Beck’s \u201cYardBurst\u201d was recently taken out for a spin in Europe courtesy of\u00a0<\/span>Craig Ross\u00a0<\/span><\/a>\u2013 Lenny Kravitz’s longtime guitarist and collaborator \u2013 after\u00a0<\/span>going under the hammer for $496,484 (\u00a3403,200)\u00a0<\/span><\/a>earlier this year.<\/p>\n

That was just the beginning of the legendary circa \u201959\u00a0<\/span>Gibson Les Paul<\/a>‘s new lease on life, facilitated by its current owner, Matthieu Lucas, from the high-profile Parisian guitar emporium,\u00a0<\/span>Matt’s Guitar Shop<\/a>. Just a few days ago, it was wielded by not one, but three luminaries from the modern guitar vanguard \u2013 namely, Marcus King, Drew Smithers, and JJ Julius Son from KALEO \u2013 at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a major event celebrating the release of KALEO\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Mixed Emotions<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>album,\u201d explains Lucas. \u201cJJ, the lead singer of the band, is one of my closest friends, and when I saw Marcus King was opening, I grabbed my ticket and brought the\u00a0<\/span>YardBurst<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>along to keep its story going at Red Rocks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucas is quickly establishing himself as a guitar matchmaker of sorts, having lent the YardBurst to Ross, but also entrusting Steve Jones\u2019 Sex Pistols Les Paul to Yungblud, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, and Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley just last year. This latest link-up is a continuation of his mission to \u201chave the next generation of players bring the YardBurst to life\u201d.<\/p>\n

Blues- and Southern rock-leaning King brandished Jeff Beck’s guitar for the first three songs of his set, \u201cincluding The Well [from 2020\u2019s El Dorado], and it was mind-blowing,\u201d before handing it over to JJ., who used it on three or four songs, including one of Lucas’ favorites, Hey Gringo.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was fascinating was how different their playing styles are, yet in each case, the YardBurst\u2019s legendary tone really shone through,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt just clicked every time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the risk associated with having such prestigious guitars out on the road, Lucas isn\u2019t interested in locking them up in a vault somewhere, never to be seen or heard again. As he aptly puts it, lending these legendary guitars to contemporary players is crucial to \u201ccarry the torch forward\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at the music industry long-term, in 10 to 15 years \u2013 maybe even sooner \u2013 many of today\u2019s legends might no longer be touring,\u201d he asserts. \u201cWhat better way to honor the past than by letting the YardBurst, which was once played by Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and many others, live on through the hands of today\u2019s artists?\u201d<\/p>\n

As for his shortlist of guitarists he’d like to see wield the YardBurst? \u201cEric Clapton would be a dream\u201d and \u201cJoe Perry would also be amazing \u2013 he loved Jeff Beck. Joe Bonamassa would surely pay a beautiful tribute too. Showing the guitar to Jimmy Page once more would be a huge honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Lucas insists that \u201call guitarists are welcome to play it. Legendary instruments are meant to be played and to inspire future generations.\u201d This writer will keep that in mind next time I’m in Paris!<\/p>\n
