Formation and Early Years<\/h2>\n

U2<\/strong> was formed in Dublin<\/strong>, Ireland, in 1976<\/strong> by Bono<\/strong> (vocals), The Edge<\/strong> (guitar), Adam Clayton<\/strong> (bass), and Larry Mullen Jr.<\/strong> (drums). It was Mullen, then just 14 years old<\/strong>, who posted the notice that brought the band together.<\/p>\n

Rise to Fame and Global Success<\/h2>\n

War (1983)<\/strong> and “Sunday Bloody Sunday”<\/strong> established a politically charged and powerful rock sound. The Joshua Tree (1987)<\/strong> became a global phenomenon<\/strong>, selling more than 25 million copies<\/strong> and producing hits such as “With or Without You”<\/strong> and “Where the Streets Have No Name”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Achtung Baby (1991)<\/strong> marked a bold shift toward a more electronic<\/strong> and ironic<\/strong> sound. The Zoo TV<\/strong> and PopMart<\/strong> tours revolutionized the concept of the stadium concert<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The performance of “Bad”<\/strong> at Live Aid<\/strong> on July 13, 1985<\/strong>, proved to be a turning point. Bono climbed down into the crowd and danced with a fan for nearly 12 minutes<\/strong>, a moment broadcast live to an estimated 2 billion viewers<\/strong>. The performance transformed U2 from a promising band into global superstars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

U2 has sold more than 170 million albums<\/strong> worldwide and won 22 Grammy Awards<\/strong>, a record for a band. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/strong> in 2005<\/strong>. Bono<\/strong> is also widely known for his humanitarian work through campaigns such as ONE<\/strong> and RED<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
