The Velvet Underground<\/strong> was formed in New York City<\/strong> in 1964<\/strong> by Lou Reed<\/strong> (vocals, guitar), John Cale<\/strong> (viola, bass, keyboards), Sterling Morrison<\/strong> (guitar), and Maureen Tucker<\/strong> (drums). White Light\/White Heat (1968)<\/strong> pushed noise rock<\/strong> to its limits.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Although commercial failures upon release, these albums later became some of the most influential records<\/strong> in rock history.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n John Cale<\/strong>, a classically trained Welsh musician, brought an avant-garde<\/strong> dimension to the band through his work with composer La Monte Young<\/strong> and the Fluxus<\/strong> movement.
