The single <strong>&#8220;Common People&#8221;<\/strong> became a <strong>class anthem<\/strong> and one of the most iconic songs of 1990s Britain.<br \/>The album sold more than <strong>4 million copies<\/strong> and won the <strong>Mercury Prize<\/strong> in <strong>1996<\/strong>.<br \/>During the <strong>1996 Brit Awards<\/strong>, while <strong>Michael Jackson<\/strong> was performing <strong>&#8220;Earth Song&#8221;<\/strong> in a messianic-style staging, Jarvis Cocker invaded the stage, dancing mockingly to protest what he saw as an <strong>overblown display of ego<\/strong>.
