Mark Freuder Knopfler<\/strong> was born on August 12, 1949<\/strong> in Glasgow<\/strong>, Scotland, to a Hungarian father and an English mother. He grew up in Newcastle<\/strong> and worked as a journalist<\/strong> and English teacher<\/strong> before dedicating himself fully to music. He formed Dire Straits<\/strong> in 1977<\/strong> in London with his brother David Knopfler<\/strong>, John Illsley<\/strong> (bass), and Pick Withers<\/strong> (drums). Brothers in Arms<\/strong> sold more than 30 million copies<\/strong>, powered by hits such as “Money for Nothing”<\/strong> (featuring Sting<\/strong> on backing vocals) and “Walk of Life”<\/strong>. It was one of the first albums recorded entirely in digital<\/strong> format and one of the earliest blockbuster successes of the CD<\/strong> era.
