Deryck Jason Whibley<\/strong> was born on March 21, 1980<\/strong> in Scarborough<\/strong>, Ontario, Canada. Raised by his single mother, he discovered punk and metal at a young age through Iron Maiden<\/strong>, Metallica<\/strong>, and the Descendents<\/strong>. He formed Sum 41<\/strong> in 1996<\/strong> in Ajax<\/strong>, a suburb of Toronto, with childhood friends. (2002)<\/strong> made the sound heavier, and Chuck (2004)<\/strong>, named after a UN peacekeeper helmet<\/strong> that saved their lives during a shoot in Congo amid conflict, pushed their blend of punk and metal<\/strong> even further. Doctors told him that another drink could kill him. He recovered, quit alcohol, and continued his career with renewed energy.
